How it's calculated
On-road price = ex-showroom price + road tax + registration & RTO fees + insurance + TCS + handling & other charges + accessories / extended warranty.
Road tax = ex-showroom price × road tax %.
TCS = ex-showroom price × TCS %, added only when the ex-showroom price is above ₹ 10,00,000.
Insurance is pre-filled as an example estimate of 3% of the ex-showroom price until you enter your own figure.
Extra over ex-showroom = on-road price − ex-showroom price, shown in rupees and as a percentage.
All rates and fees here are example values and differ by state, car and insurer. The result is an estimate. Please confirm the final price with your dealer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the on-road price of a car?
The on-road price is the total you pay to drive the car out of the showroom. It is the ex-showroom price plus road tax, registration charges, first-year insurance, TCS where applicable, and other charges such as handling, FASTag and any accessories or extended warranty you choose.
Why is the on-road price higher than the ex-showroom price?
The ex-showroom price covers the car and GST only. Road tax, registration, insurance and other costs are added when you buy, and together they commonly add a noticeable percentage on top. The calculator shows exactly how much extra you pay and where it comes from.
How much road tax should I enter?
Road tax differs by state, and often by fuel type, engine size and the price of the car. The 10% pre-filled here is only an example value. Please check your state transport department or ask your dealer for the exact rate and enter that.
What is TCS on a car purchase?
TCS is tax collected at source on the sale of a car priced above ₹ 10 lakh, charged as a percentage of the price, at 1% at the time of writing. Rules can change, so confirm the current rate with your dealer. You can set the rate to 0 in the calculator if it does not apply.
How is the insurance amount decided?
First-year insurance depends on the car's value, model, engine, add-ons, your location and the insurer. The calculator pre-fills a rough example estimate, but you should replace it with the actual quote from your dealer or insurer.
Does the calculator include discounts, loan charges or electric car benefits?
No. Dealer discounts, exchange bonuses, loan processing fees and any road tax or subsidy benefits for electric cars are not included. Adjust the inputs to your situation, for example by entering your state's lower road tax rate for an EV, and use the dealer's final quote to confirm the price.
