Fuel & EV Running Cost Calculator
See what your car costs to run per km, per month and per year, whether it runs on petrol, diesel, CNG or electricity. Add a second vehicle to compare them side by side and find out how much you could save each year.
Fuel prices pre-filled below are example values, edit to your city's price. They are not current or official prices.
Your vehicle
- Cost per km

Thinking of switching fuel type? Compare two vehicles side by side and see your yearly savings.
How it's calculated
Cost per km = fuel price ÷ mileage. The price is per litre, per kg (CNG) or per kWh (electric), and the mileage is in km/l, km/kg or km/kWh to match.
Monthly cost = cost per km × km driven per month.
Yearly cost = monthly cost × 12.
Yearly savings (when comparing) = the yearly cost of the more expensive vehicle − the yearly cost of the cheaper one.
Only fuel or electricity is counted. Insurance, servicing, tyres, parking and tolls are not included. Fuel prices shown by default are example values, so please edit them to your city's price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the running cost of my car per km?
Divide the fuel price by your mileage. For example, petrol at ₹100 per litre in a car that gives 15 km/l costs about ₹6.67 per km. Multiply by the kilometres you drive each month for the monthly cost.
Is an electric car really cheaper to run than petrol or diesel?
Usually the running cost per km is much lower, especially when you charge at home, because electricity per km costs less than fuel. Public fast chargers cost more per unit, so enter the rate you actually pay. Also compare the purchase price, as EVs often cost more upfront.
What mileage should I enter, the company claimed or real-world?
Use your real-world figure if you know it, since it is usually lower than the claimed number, particularly in city traffic or with the AC on. You can note your own by filling the tank, resetting the trip meter, and dividing the km driven by the litres at the next fill.
Which fuel prices are pre-filled, and are they current?
The prices pre-filled here are example values only and are not current or official prices. Petrol, diesel and CNG prices differ by city and change often, and electricity tariffs differ by state and charging method. Please edit them to the price you pay.
How does the comparison calculate yearly savings?
Both vehicles use the same monthly distance. The calculator works out each vehicle's yearly cost and shows the difference. It covers fuel or electricity only, not insurance, servicing, tyres or the price of the car.
Does CNG save money compared with petrol?
CNG is often cheaper per km because the price per kg is lower and mileage in km/kg is high. The saving depends on local CNG and petrol prices and on the cost of fitting a CNG kit, if the car does not come with one. Try both fuels in the comparison to see the difference.
